Advanced BioNutrition Corp. (ABN), based in Columbia, USA, was founded by David Kyle in 2001 to introduce omega fatty acid biomass into the aquaculture market.
Using algaeculture ABN produces unsaturated fatty acids for use as a foodstuff for aquatic animals reared for human consumption (Salmon, Shrimps, Tilapia etc.). The essential fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA), essential for the growth and development of fish, can be produced from renewable resources. Previously DHA and ARA could only be provided in fish food by using fishmeal and fish oil.
This idea, developed by ABN to solve crucial problems in aquaculture, could also have a potential impact in the area of "Functional Foods" in human nutrition in the future
BASF Venture Capital has been investing, together with Arancia Industrial, Sherbrooke Capital and Emerald Technology Ventures since December 2004.
